Financial Planning Day

Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest;
then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine..
—Proverbs 3:9-10 (HCSB)[1]

On Tuesday, October 6, the DeVoe School of Business had the pleasure of partnering with the City of Indianapolis, the Financial Planning Association of Greater Indiana, the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, and the Foundation for Financial Planning to host the 2015 Indianapolis Financial Planning Day. The event took place at the IWU Indianapolis (North) Education and Conference Center. And based on the positive feedback, it was a wonderful experience for all.

Certified Financial Planners (CFP) from firms throughout Indianapolis and the surrounding area volunteered to serve community members who stopped in the center from 2:00 – 7:00 PM. They provided free one-on-one financial advising covering issues such as eliminating existing debt, increasing personal savings, and thinking through retirement needs to initiate an overall personal financial plan. In addition to the one-on-one advising, participants were given access to seminars by financial experts, ranging from estate planning to investing basics.

One day prior to the capital city financial planning event, Elaine Bedel, President, Bedel Financial Consulting, posted a supportive and very informative article, Free Financial Advice…No Strings Attached, on Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick. Bedel’s post highlighted the opportunity for attendees to receive free one-on-one financial planning advice from credentialed area experts—practicing CFPs—and all with no strings attached. Included in the article was a sampling of the advice given to an attendee at a previous event: how to establish an emergency fund, maximize use of an employer’s retirement fund, save for a home downpayment, strategize personal savings, and allocate investments. The details of which are beneficial to most of us, if not all.

The event embodied the very best of what sound advising and education can do—make lives better. We at the DeVoe School of Business are committed to ensuring that fellow community members are empowered to gain a deeper knowledge of managing their financial resources so they may be liberated to effectively move “from Living to Giving, and Owing to Growing” in the words of our friends at the Ron Blue Institute.

We are grateful for all of the professionals who volunteered their time and talent to engage with participants seeking the CFPs’ expert advice for how they might obtain financial peace of mind.
